I have just come back from a ski trip to Val Thorens in France and I just wanted to share my experience with you!
Val Thorens or VT as the cooler kids are calling it, has been voted the worlds best ski resort for the third time by the World Ski Awards in 2016. I figured out whilst I was there that this could be for a variety of reasons. The first and the most important; Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe with the highest peak reaching an almighty 2300m. This leads to a of better chance of snow coverage throughout their remarkably long ski season. Leading nicely to the second reason, VT has one of the longest ski seasons, opening a week early this season (November 2016) due to great snow coverage and the resort will stay open until May, when most ski resorts will be closed.
In addition, Val Thorens is part of the 3 valleys resort which is the largest linked ski area in the world which comprises of a massive 600km of pistes. This means there is no need to do the same run twice in a week, let alone a long weekend!
VT also hosts some great après skiing (not as amazing as some resorts in Austria I’ve been told). Nonetheless VT has a big ‘clubbing at altitude’ scene with the famous La Folie Douce and 360 bar. Equally it is home to the largest club in the alps Malaysia, an underground club. Do not be put off by its understated small hut entrance!
I have been to a number of ski resorts over the years and I have to say VT has to be my favourite by miles. It simply has it all. I enjoyed the variety of piste styles and difficulties, the ability to ski over the 3 valleys and not to mention the breath taking views.
VT seems to cater for all ages and abilities, it looked to be a exceptional place to learn to ski with vast amounts of ski schools and green runs. In contrast, a great place to push yourself with vertical black runs, snow parks and not to mention the abundance off piste locations.
If you have never skied/snow boarded before and itching to try it (but a little on the fence about it), my advise to you is simple; JUST GO FOR IT! It’ll be so worth it, I promise…
